Day 4 in Chiang Mai

Pancake with caramel banana and mango ice cream. The best pancake I ever had before. Arroy (delicious in thai)

Omelette with mushroom, bacon and grilled skinless tomatoes

Sunday night market is still very charming and so much to see and eat. Honestly, usually I don't really enjoy squeezing through the crowd from stall to stall but I still think it is really worth it. During this time of the year it is consider low season partly is because it rain quite a bit but I can't imagine how pack the Sunday night market will be when it is during the high season between November to Feburary.

I planned to have a good Thai massage after my workout in the gym, so I approached the gym instructors for some recommendation. I was kind of looking forward when they directed me to this authentic Thai Massage school-like building just 5 minutes from The Chedi. After waited for 10minutes in the massage room and well dressed the will comfortable traditional thai attire, a pretty young lady came to the room and started the massage. From the first thumb pressing on the sole of the feet. I am actually disappointed and hope at least she will do a decent session. Through out the 2 hours massage, I felt like she was just practicing with a menu and hesitate where is the exact point to press at times. Anyway, you never try you never know. I will try other massage places today and hopefully I will be luckier this time.

Day 3 in Chiang Mai.

Oh gosh! Last night, it poured so heavily and once it stopped, the ritual from the nearby frogs and toads 'sang" much louder and longer than the previous night. I almost went onto the balcony and scream "Shut Up!" Obviously it was a horrible night and I have to blame the bed which is really too soft as if I am laying on a hammock between trees. Sorry chedi but to be fair, this morning I have another beautiful moment at the restaurant for my breakfast. I had this hot dish called Breakfast Bruschetta and French Toast with strawberry cream. Heavenly delicious!

What I really like about this resort is even though the occupancy is high ( based on my five gifted senses), the resort is neither crowded or noisy.

In Chiang mai, there are 2 famous night markets that are not to be missed. Saturday is at Wualia Market and Sunday night one is on Ratchadamnoen Road. Walking along these night markets is such a eye opening event as most of the vendors are the creators of those display items that they are selling and they are really very creative Not like most other night markets where usually you only get to see lots of imitations of t-shirt and watches. Tonight, I will be going to the Sunday night market.

Day 2 in Chiang Mai

Shhh...'Do not disturb' sign

Housekeeping sign.

gym time!

I am sure there are always pro and con so I am going to be nice with my comments. Well, I usually preferred a firmer bed but too bad The Chedi in Chiang Mai bed is a little too soft for me. UNFORTUNATELY with the overflowing river beside the hotel and the wet weather here, there was a helluva good orchestra performance by premium frogs ' the drummer' or toad conductor in this community.

Ok, after a good workout in the well equipped gym this morning. I excitedly headed to the highlight of my trip; the morning breakfast @ Chedi. So blessed, I was offered a charming table just next to the river. Apart from a list of selection from the menu, there was a small spread of buffet that looks really inviting. I always love to start the day with a good breakfast with a splendid ambience, I can't ask anything more. Good morning Chiang Mai !

Chiang Mai! A beautiful place I still very much in love with.

I have been looking forward to this trip as past few weeks has been tough and exhausting. Though this is my 3rd time in Chiang Mai, I am still excited and I must admit mostly is because I will be staying at The Chedi. 5 months ago, I had my high tea here (not to be missed) and fell in love with it. Just so happened two months later, I came across this superb promotion at The Chedi in Chiang Mai, my jaw literally dropped when I noticed that for the deluxe room (with breakfast hor) is going $206. Without a single hesitation I booked it! This is my first time in GHM property and so far from check-in procedure to orientation, it was swift, detail and professional. I specifically requested high floor and was granted a pool view with a stunning Ping river beside. After going around taking pictures of the rooms and surrounding, I ended up having my high tea again hahahaha.. High light for tomorrow: BREAKFAST!

Men skin; keep it clean and simple

Some people are blessed with good skin but some are not that fortunate. But no matter how your skin condition is,  everyone must learn to take care of their own face.

Basic facial regime are Cleanse, Tone, Correct and Protect. So most people have a cleanser/scrub, toner, serum/mask and moisturer/sunblock. Now, I think for men if your skin has not much problem and just wish to maintain it, I will advise you to keep it simple, just cleanse and moisturise, at most a mineral mask to pamper yourself once a week (if there are no breakouts). Strangely, I notice that sometimes when there are more steps taken to nurture the skin, it get worse! The skin can be rather unstable no matter how or what you do to it. Thumb of the rule, is all about keeping it clean and balanced.

Note: If you are having breakout,
1.do not touch your face all the time with your dirty hands (bacteria will spread faster and further)
2. do not apply minerals mask as you are feeding the bacteria in the pimple areas
3. do not keep washing your face and thought that it will get better (this will unbalance the pH level)
4. do not self extract as it will cause spreading of pimple areas or worse cause permanent scarring.
5. do not apply hair gel especially if there are breakout on the forehead
6. do not drink alcohol or smoke

What I think you can do to achieve better improved skin condition;
1. Drink lots of water and eat lots of greens and fruits
2. Apply pimple cream regularly after cleansing your face
3. Get enough sleep and rest
4. Be calm (stress could be the source) and be very patient

Of course, if nothing works and it's getting worse. Make an appointment with a dermatologist.

Hope it helps!

Body scrub then Massage or the other way round?

Whenever I get a chance to have a massage, the next thing that comes to my mind is Body Scrub. I ever asked myself must it always done before massage as it seems like is usually the case. Well, Bali proves me wrong. In Bali, most of the time massage come first and end with body scrub or body wrap. Balinese body scrub uses warm and thick scrub paste (like mud) apply generously on the skin (this feel so good) and then cover with a thin layer of cloth to dry. Next, remove the cloth and massuer will start using their palms to rub and sweep vigorously to remove the dried paste from the skin. After a thorough rinse, the skin is so smooth and supple. Heavenly! One of the most important tip before your  massuer start "Please turn off the aircon" if not you will end up shivering like a cold turkey.

Ranadi Villa in Bali

Last week was sooooo superb, our friends from Taiwan visited us and we hopped over to Bali for a 3 nights stay in this less than 3 years old property called Ranadi Villa (Seminyak). Just 15 mins away from the beach by foot and 10 mins away to the JL Laksmana where all the famous restaurants and cafes located. There is 1 master bed room on the second floor with a huge jacuzzi bath tub, 2 smaller rooms on the first floor just 1 step away from the pool. It was so much fun. To me one of the highlight is having breakfast in the villa dining area where the sky is blue and sun is warm, mmmmm what a perfect holiday. Can't wait to have another holiday with you guys soon!

I wish to be both.

So are you a Dreamer or Doer? Congratulation if you are both. Yesterday, I bought my new issue of Asia Spa Magazine and I realised that I just read something that I usually ignore or dare not to tell myself. Is like looking yourself in the mirror and face the fact that I need to be real, positive, learn to take risk and accept changes, out of the comfort zone, etc. I realised that I am a dreamer most of the time and it seems like I wish to achieve more but .... I have to to be both!!!

Names??? Positions??? Titles???

I came across this very interesting classified that really strike my attention. How amazingly creative our positions can be called. Presenters aka Receptionist, Pressure Artists aka Masseuse. Don't you think that sound so trendy?. Maybe we should have more names for various occupations so that they look more attractive and interesting. Should we call a nurse as "Medical Angel", taxi driver as "Personal Public Chauffeur", gardener as "Plants Beautician" etc.. Can you help me to name more?

Corporate Therapy (Office Massage)

In this part of the world it is still relatively new and unknown. Basically, the idea is to provide a small corner or room in the office for massages (with bed or chair). Regardless is for an hour on a massage bed or a few minutes of quick fix on a massage chair, corporate therapy is definitely making everybody happy in the office. Strangely to say, Singapore as a well established business hub internationally, such office wellness trend is still pretty alienated. I believed due to the office culture here as most bosses still couldn't agree the need of having massages in the office. We like to draw a clear line between where to relax and where to seriously make money. Unlike western office culture, many organisations there have already having such benefit for their staffs. One of the reason is they have noticed that there are better ways of using their company welfare fund and one of them is to support their physical and mental needs of the staffs well being. There are research show that organisations who cater such activity in the office help to reduce number of medical leaves, increase productivity and efficiency, staffs feel protected and happy that management do concern about their health and naturally level of integrity and loyalty increases. I remember my first corporate therapy project was with a marketing company in 2007 and till now I'm still weekly engage by some foreign organisations in Singapore. Even though I don't get the chance to work in a office environment, I am proud to have a position in the office called "Mr Battery Charger".

Paper Underwear

Paper underwear or also known as disposable underwear has never fail to make me laugh my heart out. Maybe i shall share this tiny incident that happened a few years back when i was working as a Internal Spa Trainer in one of the local spa chains. One of the duty spa therapist came out from the treatment room giggling with teary eyes. Being a trainer, I reminded her to be professional at all times. She then pulled me to one quiet corner. While wiping her tears, she took one deep breath and started whispering...'Kenny, I can't take it anymore! I have instructed my customer to put on the disposable underwear if needed.' She took another deep breath and said this 'She puts the disposable underwear over her head as if it was a shower cap!' . That was it! I lost it completely. We both laughed uncontrollably.

In my opinion, disposable underwear is definitely not the most comfortable underwear. But hey, it does what it supposed to, to cover our exquisite 'jewels' right? Then again, it depends on individual preferences. But I will say this, massage is simply a pure indulgence. Why not be a little braver, loosen up and enjoy the process? Remember you are here to de-stress!

My advice for the 'extremely shy' first timer (and you know who you are)

1. go back to the same therapist for a while before you explore other new therapists.
2. try fully clothed massages
3. Keep telling yourself ('nobody is judging me. nobody is judging me. I am beautiful. I am beautiful.)

4. Try to sleep.

Most of the spas do provide professional
drapping techniques (covered with towels)

So don't worry, just relax and enjoy........Let's go green, ok!

Massage courses on mattress.

After teaching so many classes of full body massage on a professional massage table or bed for the past few years, finally, I found a suitable mattress during tradefair in bangkok. I then decided to hold massage courses that can be easily and conveniently practised after completing the course. So far, I have just started my first class using this formate and it brought great fun to the students. I think now they must be busy pampering their family members and loved ones with what they have learnt. They are always  looking forward to lessons so that they are able to pick up more techniques. So for those who are interest to know more about this new way of learning massage. Do drop me a note.

what a stylish mattress right!

Holiday journal

To me the definition of "Holiday" mean do anything that helps you to de-stress (stay away from work and phone) and do whatever you like that makes you happy. I always love the nature and especially the beach and the forest. So usually I will end up having my holidays in resorts in southeast asia. So far, I have visited quite a few and currently top of my list is Chiang Mai, Bali and Phuket. Obviously, the reason is they have so many choices of spas that sometimes I just didn't have enough time and money to try all of them. Usually I prefer those that are standalone spas (not attached to established hotels) as they have more characters, more flexible in timing and definitely cheaper (well, cheaper doesn't mean is bad). My personal view is most of the established spa chains in the hotels sometimes over glamorised or emphasised the ambiance and facilities they have but to the actual content (spa treatments) sometimes can be disappointing. What I really upset was especially when I feel like a well marinated chicken or a dead corpse throughout the session. But then again, luck play a big part here as you never know what you get only after laying down.

I will start from here telling all my experiences (good and bad) about those spas or massage clinics or parlours that I have visit. And I would love to hear those that you have tried too. Drop me a note!

Training

In 2005, I was employed as a full time Spa Trainer in a chain of Spas in Singapore. Since then, I have accumulated training experiences in various massage styles, body scrub techniques, body detoxification, facial and slimming procedures, ear candling processes and such. In my spare time, I am also a freelance massage therapist. To date, I have chalked up more than thousand hours in body therapy work, and I have treated a few hundred customers over the past few years, including participants and delegates of corporate clients like IBM and Microsoft as part of their conference and seminar programs.
I have been given the opportunity to conduct NSRS (National Skills Recognition System) massage courses, CIBTAC Diploma in A&P (Anatomy and Physiology) courses, workshops and assessments both in Singapore and overseas.

Most people have the impression that performing massage must be very tiring and strenuous. Actually it is not that bad. As a trainer for the past few years, I realized that the right posture, the proper use of body weight, good control of the pressure applied on certain muscles, and a thorough understanding of the techniques when performing massage are definitely essential. I always remind my students that "you have to learn how to protect yourself physically before you can help others." I have seen many cases of practitioners suffering from chronic problems like lower back aches, stiff joints, muscle strain, muscle spasm etc after performing massages.
The process of learning massage or spa treatments is always fun and inspiring, and it is definitely a joy to treat your loved ones to it. As a therapist and trainer, I believe massage is not just about physically helping someone. In fact, most of the time, it can be a platform to show affection, to build bonds, deepen trust and strengthen relationships among people.

Corporate Workshop:
“Healthy Workforce Culture”
Injecting energy and elevate the working spirit in the office will definitely improve the productivity and efficiency of a company. During “Lunch Break Workshops”, I will impart simple and effective techniques to your fellow colleagues that will improve their physical, mental and emotional well being on both personal and professional level. Spa treatment courses for Couples
Due to the stressful and busy life style that we are so accustomed to these days, did we constantly remind ourselves to slow down and show some affection or attention to our beloved spouse or partner? In this course, what I would like to emphasis is on how to use simple Spa treatments as a platform for couples to spend quality time in giving and receiving treatments at their own privacy. Imagine while watching television together, don't you think is so wondering if your spouse could pamper you with a relaxing hand or foot massage or provide a stimulating facial massage after a stressful day at work. This course also meant to create opportunity to improve bonding and trust of a romantic relationship. During lesson, ideas of how to have a romantic environment and mood will be discussed too.

Shiatus Massage Class on Tatami (New) June to July 2011
Shiatsu massage course on tatami (mattress) is a brand new course that I have created this year, some of the techniques (used for professional massage table) has been modified for easier practise on their own bed or with mattress at home. I am glad to be able to organise this class and happy to know that both students had a great time during lessons and I am really impressed by the "assessement" they have attended with remarkable result after 4 weeks of lessons with me. Keep it up and keep practising!

Shiatsu Massage Class March 2011
I remember I was in Chiang Mai having my retreat and after multiple exchanged of sms we finalised the schedule and started this new class. They both have the same objective of learning this skill to treat their family members. With that noble thought I improvised many other techniques to make it much easier for them duirng lessons.

Shiatsu Massage Class July 2010
To me, having this intensive Shiatsu massage class (11th and 12th July 2010) was definitely more exciting than the World Cup Final. Even though she was unwell and much smaller size than him, her determination to master all techniques and using all her effort and energy during the class were definitely inspiring. Performing massages are not about how strong you are but how you correctly and accurately apply the techniques with the correct postures.

Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage May 2010
In this class, both students are young professionals and would like to pick up massage lessons to pamper their loved ones as well as a hobby. Initially, both were very shy but shown high level of seriousness and attentiveness in class. After third lesson, they actually produced very good massage flow and rhythm throughout the whole practise. From my observation, both students kept adjusting their positions in order to master those massage techniques in good posture habits. This really make me proud as it is one of the most important factors when learning such holistic practise.

Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage April 2010
It has been such a pleasure and honour to meet this wonderful lady with full of passion and charisma. It is a 2 days of Swedish and Deep Tissue massage lessons as we couldn't find another partner for her. Being a professional dancer herself, she learned really fast and with very good posture and flow. I really salute to her enthusiasm and seriousness that she managed to arrange 3 models for her lessons in 2 days. Keep up the positive spirit and I am sure she will perform very good massage work sooner or later. Well done!

Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage March 2010
Within a short notice of less than a week, I was lucky to pair up 2 foreigners from different countries and organised a Swedish and Deep Tissue massage lessons which started on 16th March and ended on 27th March 2010. During lessons, we discussed and shared information about the holistic practises and spa businesses in different countries and it is really inspiring to learn so much from one another. They both were beginners in this industry and looking forward to explore more in the near future. Good luck!

A&P Anatomy and Physiology CIBTAC
From 20th July to 8th August 2009, I was assigned to teach A&P (Anatomy and Physiology) class for another batch of CIBTAC students who are taking their diploma examination in October 2009. The most challenging part for this batch was I need to conduct the class throughout in bilingual (English and Mandarin) as there were some students from China who totally do not understand English at all. But with the help of the Mandarin referrence book and notes that provided to the students it did not really affect the pace of the progress and the understanding of the subject for the whole class.

Swedish and Deep Tissue massage
On 10th and 17th May 2009, I have conducted another class in Swedish and Deep Tissue massage just for 1 student with the help of his friend. David has been trained and certified in Foot Reflexology but not in any form of full body massage. In the initial stage of the lesson, he is rather shy and uncomfortable but after he started to follow the massage sequences, I can see his potential in this form of massage.

Anatomy & Physiology
From 8th Feburary to 23rd March on every Sunday and Monday (total more than 50 hours), I was assigned to conduct 2 classes of A&P (Anatomy & Physiology) lessons for the students who are taking their CIBTAC Diploma in April. As theory lessons can be rather dry and taxing so I try to provide more diagrams and describe some topics in Mandarin and dialects so that they get an easier and better understand of this theory course.

AIA Chair Massage Workshop in Feburary 2009
In Feb 2009, I was very fortunte to be approached by AIA (Insurance company), Learning & Development Department to conduct a Chair Massage Workshop for about 170 staffs at all 3 branches in Singapore. I specially designed a set of simple and effective massage techniques mainly for people who work in desk bound environment and who usually suffer ache and pain on shoulder, neck, head and upper limbs. During this lunch break workshop apart from learning some helpful massage techniques especially when they need a "quick fix". It defintiely a good opportunity for bond building and get to know one another from different departments.

Swedish and Deep Tissue Oil Massage

From 5th to 10th Feb 2009, I was engaged by Shruti to conduct a personal Swedish and Deep tissue oil massage as she was very interested but unfortunately was leaving Singapore within a week. So I created a personal course just specially for her and it all went well due to her cooperation in schedule, determination and also with a few hours of help as a model by her husband. It was pretty inspiring and interesting as I realised that it is possible to conduct a class for individual. On certain lessons, I will demostrate on her e.g legs and hands massage and she will practice on me but of course lessons on prone (receiver facing down) position with no other choice a pre-arranged model has to be on standby.

Facial Assessment in December 2008
In December 2008, I was assigned to conduct another Facial assessement under the NSRS certification together with another assessor.

Oil Massage Course in October 2008
Time really flies when I have a really interesting and fun training experience with two energtic and bubbly students. It was a straight consecutive 4 days intensive class at a flexible timing of either morning or afternoon. Throughout the 4 days, I have to salute to these two ladies who so serious that after class they even line up a list of friends for practises. It is really remarkable that both ladies stay focus throughout the lessons and really touched by their passion.

Bridal Make Up Competition
It is such an honour to be one of the judges of the Bridal Make up competition orgainised by Jean Elegance and sponsors by BL Studio and Singtrain Academy in September 2008. Contestants dolled up their models with lots of creativity and patient as the whole contest last about 6 hours. Among 20 contestants, 6 were selected to be the finalists and the top 3 winners were personally picked by me. I am so proud of myself, hahaha..

Oil Massage Course in August 2008
In early August 2008, 2 cheerful young ladies from Scotland found my massage training services from my website and engaged me to teach them full body oil massage. It is really exciting to see them once a week for 5 hours and from simply spreading oil technique on body at the beginning stage till able to performance a decent 90 minutes massage which included facial massage was such an inspiring and satisfactory moment to me. I hope they continue to practise and bring lots of joy and happiness to their love ones.

Facial assessment in July 2008
In July 2008, I was assigned to conduct another facial assessment. There were 4 candidates and mostly were well trained and experienced in the Beauty Industry.

Facial assessment in March 2008
In 2008 March, I was given a new challenge to conduct a facial assessment certified by NSRS on 3 candidates.

Outdoor event
In January 2008, I participated in an event in a mosque in Choa Chu Kang under CDC organization. And during the events, we promoted massage courses to the public and were visited by some of the ministers too.

8 Hours of Chair Massage Course
Chair massage is one the simpliest techniques to learn as it can be easily applied anywhere and anytime as long as you have a chair or a stool. It is very suitable for beginners, especially when they wish to pick up massage courses and yet are not too sure whether they will be able to cope. The techniques taught are mainly based on the manipulation of shoulder, lower back, head, neck and arm areas.
